Jack O' LanternThe symbol often associated wit Halloween is the golden orange pumpkin with a devious hollow face cut with a candle lighted inside it. This pumpkin represents Jack O' Lantern.
Story goes that Jack who goes around with a lantern something akin to a town crier was a real tease. He would play pranks on all and sundry. One day he even cajoled the devil to climb a tree. when the devil was up in the tree, he quickly affixed crucifixes all around the tree so that the devil could not descend.
Jack made the devil to promise never to take his soul to Hell and the devil grudgingly agreed. Jack soon passed on. The devil kept his promise and Jack found himself at the pearly gates of heaven. Howver, St. Peter would not let Jack in because Jack was such a sinful fella.
So, Jack was left in suspended animation between heaven and hell and was wont to roam on earth. To help him to see through the darkness the devil gave Jack a burning coal to find himself around
